Sheena Wellington

A well-respected, award-winning singer of traditional Scottish song, Sheena has been an advocate for traditional music and for the Scots language. She’s toured the world and made several solo albums, but her most famous moment was when she sang Robert Burns’s “A Man’s A Man” at the opening of the Scottish Parliament in 1999, as seen below.

A MAN’S A MAN by Robert Burns

This powerful song conveys the egalitarian attitudes of Scottish culture. Wellington sang it at the opening of the Scottish Parliament with the Queen in attendance. You may appreciate Alasdair Fraser’s comments about the song/poem, written for this site to accompany his recording of the melody on fiddle.
